Safety is Number One

Safety is our First Priority, in carrying the future.

Parkview Transit is dedicated, above all else, to the safety of its student passengers, its employees, and the public with whom we share the road each day. Our approach to safety is based on behavior & results, while ensuring we meet or exceed regulations.

It is Parkview’s belief that the principals embodied in the company’s behavior-based approach to safety should be experienced by its employees, customers, and most of all, its student passengers in the form of a common safety culture throughout the operation.

Parkview values it’s partnerships with the communities it services.

We value the positive relationships we have maintained within each community where we pro Parkview’s Drivers, Mechanics, Management and Staff are committed:vide transportation services. Some of the ways we are trying to make a difference is fundraising events, education scholarships, participating in local non-profit groups and organizations.

  • …to the safety and well being of all students we transport
  • …to the best customer services available
  • …to creating a positive work place
  • …to being proactive in protecting the environment
  • …to leading the way in Safety and Service

Our Safety Team

We have fulltime licenced trainers in all our locations, along with our Area Manager of Safety & Training. All of which have signing authority authorized by the Ministry of Transportation Licensing Branch, which enables them to upgrade and re-test our driver’s. Our trainers are focused on all aspects of safety, including driver training, driver education, and customer safety education.

Our Training Program consists of in class and behind the wheel training in order to obtain a “B” license. As well as our own eight hour Ministry of Transportation approved School Bus Driver Improvement Course, which all drivers must have in order to upgrade their license to a “B”. Our existing drivers must also complete every 3 years a School Bus Driver Improvement Refresher course.

Driver Qualification & Hiring

Parkview believes that our employees are our most valuable assets and that the success of the company is determined by the quality of its employees. The company is committed to hiring only the best and most qualified drivers.

To help carry out this commitment, Parkview has the following driver qualification procedures:

  • Minimum age requirement of 21 years of age to operate a company vehicle
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable driving experience
  • Pass an interview with the division manager
  • Pass a reference check
  • Pass police clearance criminal check (Vulnerable sector search)
  • Pass MTO medical requirements
  • Pass a T.B. test
  • Pass a current driving license check
  • Pass School Bus Driver Improvement Course

Parkview’s driver hiring qualification standards and procedures have been developed to help ensure that drivers share Parkview’s values and goals of operating in a safe, legal, and professional manner.

Driver Evaluations & Reviews

Our drivers are reviewed bi-annually as a part of their on-going training, both formally and during spot checks. This allows the opportunity for both driver and trainer to review safety procedures, and address any concerns or questions.

Driver Training and Continual Education

The safe transportation of students requires the dedicated efforts of many individuals associated with the company. This includes Parkview management, drivers, maintenance personnel, government agencies, local school officials, parents, and students.

Parkview is committed to the continual safety awareness and preparedness of our drivers. Each driver is required to participate in 10 hours of training within a school year. This training is a combination of branch pre season start-up meetings, safety meetings, local & provincial required programs. Such topics as dealing with passengers with life threatening allergies, Bill 157, Winter Driving, First Aid (where required) & Transporting Special Needs passengers to name a few. We also provide on-line training courses for our drivers, and staff on such topics as Autism Spectrum Disorders & Stomp out Bullying.

Safety Awards Program

Parkview has its own in-house safe driving awards program which provides annual recognition of all drivers who achieve or maintain an accident free record. We are very proud to have drivers that have attained up to 42 years of accident free driving with Parkview. Our commitment to safety is reflected in our driver’s safe driving years.

Accident Review Process

In the unfortunate event of an accident, our Accident Review Committee, which is made up of managers, mechanics, safety personnel & drivers, will create a report of recommendations on how to prevent accidents of the same nature in the future. All drivers involved in a preventable collision will be retrained in the applicable area by an approved trainer prior to the driver operating a company vehicle.

Photo I.D.

All our staff & drivers wear a photo identification badge when on duty. Parkview believes that wearing identification while on duty helps our parents, schools and public identify Parkview employees. It creates a sense of who we are as a company, a team working together.

O.P.P. and local Police Partnerships

Parkview has teamed up with the Ontario Provincial Police in a unique community awareness partnership. We have donated a school bus that has been converted into a mobile classroom. The O.P.P. will use this vehicle to visit local communities to promote awareness on road, property and personal safety. Parkview also partners with our local police for school bus evacuation training in some areas, as well as First Rider programs for the junior kindergarten students prior to their first days of school.

To further enhance our commitment to safety, we are very active members in the following groups and associations:

  • WSIB Safety Groups Association
  • Council of Driver Trainers
  • Ontario Safety League
  • Ontario School Bus Association
  • Sponsors of the New Tecumseth Road Watch program

Parkview has also been given the Good Neighbors Award for 2011, thanks to our drivers & staff for donating & collecting over 1,880 lbs of food for the local food bank. As well as our Relay for Life Team which raised $7,700.00 this past year for Cancer. Parkview has started a scholarship fundraiser this year, and hopes to raise $4,000.00 for scholarships to our local High schools. “Coats for Kids” is just one more fundraising event that our drivers and staff have participated in and managed to collect over 450 coats to help keep our communities warm!

Together with our drivers, managers, mechanics, and safety team we are carrying the future safely!
